Frequently asked questions
Online veterinary radiology review: pricing, turnaround, formats and how reads are made.
How much does an online veterinary X-ray read cost?
$12.99 per study of up to 6 images with pay as you go. Creating an account is free, and there is no subscription, contract, minimum or monthly fee: you are charged only when you submit a study. High-volume clinics can connect their X-ray machine for $9.99 per study with a 50-study monthly minimum.
Is there a subscription?
Not for pay as you go. You can submit one study a year or fifty a week; you pay $12.99 for each study you submit, and nothing else. Only the optional connected X-ray plan has a monthly minimum.
How fast do I get the radiology report?
Usually within a few minutes of submitting. The study shows as "Reading" in your list, then "Read" with the report ready to open and download as a PDF.
Who or what reads the radiographs?
Several independent AI readers review every study, following a veterinary radiology checklist (thorax, abdomen and musculoskeletal findings), and their results are combined into one report. Where they disagree or are unsure, the report flags it for your attention instead of guessing. The reading is continuously trained by veterinarians' corrections.
Is Rad-Reader continuously trained?
Yes. Rad-Reader is continuously trained by veterinarians. Every report has a review panel where the veterinarian confirms or corrects each finding and adds anything that was missed; those corrections become standing reading instructions applied to every future study, and they are collected as labelled training data for our models. The more it is used, the better it reads.
Does this replace a board-certified veterinary radiologist?
No. Rad-Reader is decision support for the attending veterinarian, who remains responsible for the diagnosis and treatment. It gives you a fast, structured second look; for complex, ambiguous or high-stakes cases we recommend a consultation with a board-certified radiologist.
What image formats can I upload, and how many images?
DICOM (.dcm), JPEG and PNG. Up to 6 images per study, for example two thoracic views and two abdominal views. Clear photos or exports of the radiographs work; original DICOM files give the best detail.
Which species and body regions are covered?
Dogs and cats are most studies, and other species can be submitted. Reads cover the thorax (heart, lungs, pleural space, mediastinum), the abdomen (liver, spleen, GI tract, urinary tract, reproductive organs) and the musculoskeletal system (fractures, joints, spine, bone lesions).
What should I include in the medical history?
The presenting complaint, relevant history, exam findings and any lab results. The history tells the readers what to look for: "straining to urinate" makes them trace the whole urinary tract, "vomiting" makes them look for foreign material.
Can I ask a follow-up question about a report?
Yes. On any report you can add more history or a specific question (for example "please check the urethra for stones") and the study is read again with it. The answer appears at the top of a new version of the report; earlier versions are kept.
What does the report include?
Patient details, the case history you provided, findings by body region, conclusions, recommendations and the images, with your hospital's name and the requesting veterinarian. You can view it online, print it, or download a PDF for the medical record.
Can I connect my digital X-ray machine?
Yes. Clinics with a digital X-ray system can send studies straight to Rad-Reader over DICOM, at $9.99 per study with a 50-study monthly minimum ($499.50/month) and unlimited image hosting. Studies wait in your list until you add the history and submit. See Connect your X-ray machine.
What if a read fails?
If a study can't be read, the charge is refunded automatically and you can submit it again.
Is my data private?
Studies are visible only to the people in your hospital's account. Card payments are handled by Stripe; card numbers never reach our servers. See the privacy policy.
I use DVMLog. Do I need a new account?
No. Hospitals connected through DVMLog keep their existing sign-in and go straight to their hospital's dashboard.
How long are images kept?
Pay as you go: images are hosted for 30 days, for up to your 50 most recent studies; reports and PDFs stay in your account. Connected X-ray plan: unlimited image hosting while your plan is active.
